Selecting Specific Columns Can Break Eloquent Relationships

Always include foreign key and primary key columns when using select() alongside eager loaded relationships.

Using select('name') on a query with eager loaded relationships strips out foreign key columns like user_id. Without foreign key values, Eloquent cannot match child records to parent models, returning null.

// BAD: Missing user_id causes $post->author to return null!
$posts = Post::select('id', 'title')->with('author')->get();

// GOOD: Include foreign key 'user_id' so relationship matching works
$posts = Post::select('id', 'title', 'user_id')->with('author')->get();

• Eloquent requires foreign keys in select() arrays to associate eager loaded models
• Always include primary key (id) and foreign key (e.g. user_id) when specifying select columns
